Will of Catharine Higlin nee Stengel - My 2nd Great Gandmother

The Last Will and Testament of Catharine Higlin, widow. 

I, Catharine Higlin, of Village of Berlin, widow of the late Jacob Higlin of same place, Inn Keeper, deceased, being at present of sound mind and memory…do make and constitute these presents as my Last Will and Testament…Whereas the said late husband's own Will and Testament, dated the seventeenth of April 1850, and proven on the eighth of February 1853, did leave all the property left by him into my hands, possession and disposal, therefore do I now in power and virtue of his said Will direct and ordain, that all the real and personal property left by me shall be sold by my hereinafter mentioned Executors as soon as it conveniently can and may be after my decease to the best advantage of my estate, and the proceeds thereof put out on interest for the welfare of my children, to be portioned out to them in equal share and be paid over to them as they come of age, son Ferdinand, when Twenty one years old and my daughters, Catharine and Wilhelmine when eighteen years old. My said son Ferdinand is to be put out to some trade according to his own liking, and my daughters shall also be put to earn their living. My real property consists of the property on which I now do live on the South side of King, West of Cedar street, of about three roods (Rood is an English unit of area, equal to one quarter of an acre) ; a small lot of about one rood on the East side of Cedar Street, and one lot of about one acre on the north side of King Street, with barn and stables thereon, all in Berlin aforesaid. I hereby nominate, constitute and appoint my well-beloved brother Jacob Kramer, of the said Village of Berlin, Stocking Weaver, and Henry Eby of the same place, Gentleman, as my Executors of this my Last Will and Testament… I especially charge them to see to the welfare of the children, and that they do get their proper schooling. I also empower and authorize them in the sale of my Real Estate to grant, execute and deliver to the purchasers thereof good and sufficient deeds of conveyance thereof, and do also all other matters and things, instruments and writings which they all and will deem proper…

Hueglin, Fred and Lillian McPherson

1921 - In Jun 1921 Frederick (Fred) Hueglin, Eugene’s father, was living with Lillian McPherson at 190 King St, Waterloo, Ontario. In that year's Census, although Eugene’s mother Caroline Maurer had died in 1916, Fred is listed as married, age 44, head of the household, a painter making $1500 a year. She is listed as married, age 25, adopted daughter of the household head, born in the USA, immigrated in 1909, parents born in Quebec, no occupation and no income.

The Guyon, Laforest, Hueglin Connection

Marie Laforest, David Hueglin Connection

Jean Jacques Guyon dit Du Buisson Link was born on Sep 18, 1592, in Mortagne, France, the child of Jacques Guyon and Marie Huet.

He married Mathurine Robin in 1615 in Mortagne.

He died on May 30, 1663, in Beauport, Canada, at the age of 70, and was buried in Quebec City.

Jean Jacques is a common ancestors of Marie Andree Laforest by way of his daughter Barbe Guyon  and David Earle Hueglin by way of his son Jean Guyon Link.

The following is an outline of how Marie Andree Laforest and David Earl Hueglin share this common ancestor.

When Barbe Guyon was born on Apr 19, 1617, in Mortagne, France, her father, Jean, was 24. She married Pierre Paradis on Feb 11, 1632, in her hometown.  She died on Nov 27, 1700, in Quebec City, at the age of 83 years.

Madeleine Paradis was born on Jul 3, 1653, in Quebec City, the child of Pierre Paradis and Barbe Guyon. She married Nicolas Roussin on Nov 28, 1667, in Montmorency. She died as a teenager on Nov 29, 1669, in L’Ange-Gardien, and was buried in Chateau Richer.

Madeline Marie Roussin was born on Nov 25, 1669, in Chateau Richer, the child of Nicolas Roussin and Madeleine Paradis. She married Pierre Tremblay on Nov 15, 1685, in Montmorency. She died in 1752 in Charlevoix, at the age of 82 years, and was buried in Quebec City.

Nicolas Tremblay was born on Jan 22, 1699, in Baie-St-Paul, the child of Pierre Tremblay and Madeline Marie Paradis. He married Louise Simard on Jan 18, 1724, in his hometown. He died on Aug 16, 1748, in St Paul, at the age of 49, and was buried in Quebec City.

Basile Tremblay was born on Dec 28, 1724, in Baie-St-Paul, the child of Nicolas Trembley and Louise Simard. He married Marie-Françoise Terrien on Feb 7, 1752, in Les Éboulements. He died on Jul 29, 1803, in Les Éboulements, at the age of 78 years, and was buried in Quebec City.

Andre Sauveur Tremblay was born on Oct 31, 1760, in Les Éboulements, the child of Basile Tremblay and Marie-Françoise Terrien. He married Marguerite Ursule Gagnon on Sep 4, 1781, in his hometown. He died in 1823 at the age of 62.

Joseph Marie Tremblay was born on Oct 15, 1786, in Les Éboulements, the child of Andre Sauveur Tremblay and Marguerite Ursule Gagnon. He married Marie Christine Théophilie Martel on Aug 11, 1820, in Quebec City. He died on Oct 13, 1837, in his hometown, at the age of 50.

Pierre Goliath Tremblay was born on May 10, 1832, in Les Éboulements, the child of Joseph Marie Tremblay and Marie Christine Théophilie Martel. He married Marie Olympe Tremblay in 1852 in Charlevoix. He died in 1870 at the age of 37.

Joseph Tremblay was born in Feb 1853 in Quebec City, the child of Pierre Goliath Tremblay and Marie Olympe Tremblay. He married Marie Vitaline Girard on Jun 26, 1876, in Laterrière.

Arthur Adélard Tremblay was born in Apr 1878 in Quebec City, the child of Joseph Tremblay and Marie Vitaline.

Alice Tremblay was born in Apr 1902 in Quebec City, the child of Arthur Adélard Tremblay and Annabelle Tremblay. She married Télesphore Bouchard

Aline Bouchard, the child of Télesphore Bouchard and Alice Tremblay, married Pierre Laforest.

Marie Andree Laforest, the child of Pierre Laforest and Aline Bouchard, married David Earle Hueglin.
When Jean Guyon was born on 18 Sep 1592, in in Mortagne, France, his father, Jean Jacques, was xx. He married Elizabeth Coulliard on 27 Nov 1645, in Quebec. He died on 13 Jan 1694, in Chateau Richer, at the age of xx.

Joseph Guyon was born on Sep 10, 1649, in Quebec City, the child of Jean Guyon and Elizabeth Coulliard. He married Genevieve Cloutier on Jan 29, 1674, in Chateau Richer. He died on Sep 8, 1712, in Portneuf, at the age of 62.

Angelique Guyon was born in 1677 in Chateau Richer, the child of Joseph Guyon and Genevieve Cloutier. She married Jacques Letourneau on Feb 8, 1694, in Mauricie. She died on Mar 13, 1718, in Quebec City, at the age of 41.

Marie Angelique Letourneau was born on Mar 12, 1697, in Champlain, the child of Jacques Letourneau and Angelique Guyon. She died on Feb 10, 1765, in St Maurice, at the age of 67.

Marie Madeleine Leboeuf was born on Dec 23, 1731, in Maskinongé, the child of Jean Baptiste Leboeuf and Marie Angelique Letoutneau . She married Gabriel Rochefort dit Gervais on Nov 16, 1750, in Quebec City.

Jean Baptiste Gervais  I was born on Oct 13, 1753, in Quebec City, the child of Gabriel Rochefort dit Gervais and Marie Madeleine Leboeuf. He married Marie Josephte Arcouet dit Lajeunesse on Sep 25, 1775, in Châteauguay. He died in 1809 at the age of 55.

Jean Baptiste Gervais II was born on Oct 4, 1776, in Quebec City, the child of Jean Baptiste Gervais I and Marie Josephte Arcouet dit Lajeunesse. He married Catherine Mercier on Nov 6, 1809, in Les Cèdres. He died in 1811 at the age of 34.

Jean Baptiste Gervais III was born on Jul 6, 1811, in Île-Perrot, the child of Jean Baptiste Gervais II and Catherine Mercier. He married Marie Josephte Auger. He died on May 2, 1887, in Stoney Point, at the age of 75 years, and was buried there.

Jean Baptiste Gervais IV was born on Jul 15, 1832, in Beauharnois, the child of Jean Baptiste Gervais III and Marie Josephte Auger. He died on Dec 23, 1916, in Stoney Point, at the age of 84, and was buried there.

Achille Ovila Gervais was born on Aug 6, 1886, in Stoney Point, the child of Jean Baptiste Gervais IV and Théotiste Desjarlais. He married Émilie (Millie) Meloche on Oct 19, 1914, in Windsor. He died on Jan 21, 1980, in Windsor, at the age of 93, and was buried there.

Gladys Gervais was born on Nov 23, 1915, in Walkerville, the child of Achille Ovila Gervais and Émilie (Millie) Meloche. She married Ross Earle Agla on Nov 2, 1935, in her hometown. She died on Sep 29, 1996, in Windsor, at the age of 80, and was buried in Chatham.

Barbara June Agla, the child of Ross Earle Agla and Gladys Gervais, married James Eugene Hueglin.

David Earle Hueglin, the child of James Eugene Hueglin and Barbara June Agla, married Marie Andree Laforest.

1843 to 1914, Hueglin, Frederika Wilhelmina

Frederika Wilhelmina (Minnie) Hueglin, the third of Johann Jacob and Kathrin Stengel's children, was born in Berlin Ontario in 1842, married Philip Jacobi before 1867, and died in 1914 of arteriosclerosis while living at 151 Walmer Rd, Toronto ON. She is said to be buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Toronto. In the 1881 Census of Ontario she is shown as Emma Jacobi, age 34. This would imply she was born in 1847. In the 1901 Census of Toronto she is shown as Minnie Jacobi,  widowed, age 68, born 1843 in Ontario, racial origin German, religion Lutheran, parent of Minnie Jacobi age 24, Emile Jacobi age 22, and Ida Jacobi age 19. Assuming the date shown for her birth is correct, her age should be shown as 58.Of interest is the fact that, as shown below, she is variously referred to as Wilhelmine Rugele, Fredericka Whitchima Hagelin, Freidericke W Jacobi, Whilemina Hueglin, and Fredrica Hugulin.

Philip Jacobi was born in Germany about 1832, and died of cancer of the bladder in 1901, while living at 180 Bloor St E. He is listed in Lovell's Canadian Dominion Directory for 1871 as the owner of a leather store. He is also shown in the History of Toronto and County of York, Ontario under Leather and Shoe Supply Merchants: P. Jacobi, wholesale leather dealer and importer of shoe findings, 5 Wellington Street East, established the business in 1869 at 103 Yonge Street. In 1877 he removed to his present locality, the building occupying a frontage 30 X 90 feet. having a height of four stories. He does a large and extensive trade, in which two travelers cover the Provinces of Ontario and Manitoba. Mr. Jacobi is of German birth, and came to Canada in 1854. In the 1881 Census of Ontario he is shown as Wm. Jacobi, age 50.

Frederika and Philip had five known children:
·         Emma Marie Christine was born on 1867, in Toronto. She is shown as Emma Jacobi, age 14 in the 1881 Census of Ontario. Her wedding announcement reads: 1893-09-20, Emma Marie Christine Jacobi, age 26, daughter of Philip  and Freidericke W Jacobi, married, in York, Charlie Morse. Age 31, son of George D. and Elizabeth Morse.
·         Freiderich Wilhelm Bismarck's birth announcement reads: 1871-11-27, Freiderich William Bismark Jacobi, born in Toronto, son of Philip Jacobi (leather dealer) and Wilhelmine Rugele (infm). I have no idea what the abbreviation infm means. He is shown as  Fred Jacobi, age 9 in the 1881 Census of Ontario. His wedding announcement reads: 1897-11-02, Frederick William Jacobi, age 26, clerk, son of Philip Jacobi and Fredrica Hugulin, married, in Toronto, Mabel Blanche Best, age 22, daughter of Thomas J. and Mary Ann Bailey. Witnesses were Minnie and Emile Theodore Jacobi..The birth announcement of their son reads: 1901-03-11, Frederick Philip Baily Jacobi, son of Frederick W Jacobi and Mabel B Best, was.born in Toronto,
·         Minnie is shown as Minnie Jacobi, age12 in the 1881 Census of Ontario, but age 24 in the 1901Census of Ontario.
·         Emile is shown as age 7 in the 1881 Census of Ontario, but age 22 in the 1901 Census of Ontario.
·         Ida Laura is shown as Idah, age 7 in the 1881 Census of Ontario, but age 19 in the 1901 Census of Ontario. Her birth announcement reads: 1878-10-12, Ida Laura Jacobi, daughter of Philip Jacobi and Fredericka Whitchima Hagelin, born in Toronto, Her death announcement reads; 1933-05-20, Ida Laura Jacobi, daughter of Philip Ceuln Jacobi and Whilemina Hueglin, died in York.
