Having been widowed in 1850, upon the death of her husband Johann Jacob Huglin from a liver complaint, my gggm, Kathrin, or Catharina, Huglin, nee Stengel, who was born in France in 1808, was left to raise her remaining three children, all of whom were born in Canada. Katherine was born in 1838, Ferdinand in 1840, and Friderika, or Frederika Wilhemina, in 1843. Katherine married Frederick Riegelmann and subsequently move to Buffalo, NY. Harriet, in 1847; and the twins, John Jacob and Frederich Wilhelm in 1850, possibly from influenza. In 1851, Kathrin, and the three children were believed to be living in the Village of Berlin. Her father had by then died, however, her mother Christina, age 75, was living with her brother George and his wife Margareth, nee Roth.

In his will, dated …, Johann Jacob had stipulated, in part, that "The Inn and Household shall be carried on by my beloved widow Catharine as hither to, and on the same premises we now live in. ... She is to have the Children under her, but the boys , shall, when fourteen years old, be put out to learn trades, according to their inclination. Should my widow not find it convenient to continue the Tavern, then she may give it in Rent, and out of the Rent to keep House with the children, and have thus the use of all this property for her own and the children's use and benefit as long as she shall and does live. But in case that my widow should intermarry again, she is to draw only her widow third. As soon as can be conveniently be done after my demise, all superfluous Articles of my household, of my Tavern, my Team and my Lot of Land, situate, on the East side of Cedar Street of Berlin, South of King Street, of about a quarter acre, shall be sold ... my Joiner Tools shall also be sold.
